Matthew leaned against the counter and crossed his arms. Cody was getting more self-assured, but he still jumped and blinked, eyes twitching a little. He was tying his apron on, and now his fingers fumbled with the ties. "Yes, boss?" he asked nervously.
Matthew uncrossed his arms. "Er, you know about the internet, right?"
"Um, no?" said Cody, looking at him strangely. "No more than anybody else, I mean. I'm more into drama than tech."
"You can look things up online, though, right?"
"Um, yeah. With Google. Don't you have a computer, boss?" He cast Matthew a curious look and finished tying his apron.
"I have Netflix and cable. What more do I need?" In truth, he had little use for a computer. He kept records on paper for tax purposes and had an accountant; on the rare times when he'd needed to look up things online, he'd gone to the library and often had to ask for help. He knew he was a bit old-fashioned that way, but whatever. He didn't need some kid thinking he was completely out of the picture.
"And do you use that a lot? Netflix?" The child was smirking. Of all the nerve. "With Jake, maybe?"
"Yes," said Matthew impatiently. He didn't get what was funny. "But last night he was watching cable when I got home, and I need to know what the movie was." He hesitated, unsure how to tell the boy, or even if he should.
But he needed a co-conspirator to help him figure out what had been wrong for Jake to make him feel so sad. He unbent at Cody's inquiring look. "It made him cry. He doesn't cry at movies! It was on the Lifetime network. I want to know what it was about."
Cody gnawed on his lip and nodded. "I should be able to find that for you, boss. I'll see what I can find. What time was it on?" He pulled out a slightly battered-looking cell phone and turned it on.
Matthew told him the time, and waited impatiently while his young friend looked it up online. Perhaps he should consider getting one of those newfangled internet phones for himself. But he had enough to do trying to get a regular phone to work. They were such fiddly things, hard to punch numbers with big fingers, and they were slippery in hand, fell easily, and smashed and broke as if they'd been born to it. He'd given up and gone back to a landline not long ago. The internet phones didn't look any easier to handle, to his suspicious gaze.
"Ah. Here we go," said Cody. "Looks like it was called..." He drew back, making a kind of face with his brows drawing up. "Return to Lonely Falls. A corporate businesswoman moves home to take care of her sick father, and finds love in the slow-paced county town." He wrinkled his nose. "Sounds kind of dopey to me."
Matthew was just as stumped. "There must've been something good about it. Does it say anything more about the plot?"
"Um.
